Former McAdams Junior High school band director, Wade McDonald conducts the McAdams Junior High Honors Band as they perform the Dickinson High fight song during a ceremony naming the band hall in McDonald's honor Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023.The list of accolades is long for retired Dickinson ISD band director Wade McDonald, who recently returned to McAdams Junior High School for a renaming dedication ceremony of the school’s band hall in his honor.

In 1981, just two years after McDonald came to McAdams, the small band was selected for the honor roll of the Texas Music Educators Association . His career in Dickinson ISD would include the band receiving subsequent TMEA honor-roll mentions, University Interscholastic League state placings and performances at state-wide conventions, as well as various individual state recognitions for McDonald.

Larry Gregory, a saxophone player in the beginner band at McAdams in 1978, noted the competitive culture and the demand of excellence that McAdams brought to the district, but also the “calm, cool demeanor” he used to get the best of his young students. “He somehow was able to motivate a bunch of 12- and 14-year-olds to learn to read music and play a new instrument and then a year later compete to be one of the best junior high bands in the state,” Gregory said. “Mr. Mac instilled within us the discipline and desire to be great, often without us realizing how good he was at his craft.”

“He’s an honest man and treats kids fairly and works them hard and wants them to reach their full potential. He’s that guy that drives you.” Rebekah Delgado, a band director at the district's Dunbar Middle School, calls McDonald a master of not only band instruments but of what it takes to inspire kids.Once when McDonald substituted for another band director at her school, the class lit up.
