Work still has not started on an apartment block approved in summer of 2021

A site in Holywood town centre earmarked for a new apartment block has become an antisocial behaviour hotspot while developers delay work two years after getting the green light.

Elected representatives green lighted a three storey apartment block containing 21 apartments, associated landscaping, access, car and cycle parking areas, as well as the demolition of Downshire Road Church Hall and adjacent office buildings. The plan involves six one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments.

No works appear to have begun since the council’s approval. The expiry date of the planning permission is July 22, 2026. Commenting on the issue, local MLA Andrew Muir said: “I first received reports of break-ins and antisocial behaviour in July this year, and despite raising this with the property management company and local neighbourhood police team, issues are still ongoing. There have been further break-ins and most recently an incident involving children getting stuck on the access gate at the side of the building.
