While the full impact of the storm was expected to hit on Sunday evening and Monday, weather experts have warned that New Zealanders could still be experiencing poor conditions until Tuesday. Forecaster MetService said it was expecting a"widespread and significant" weather event with heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.
Auckland Emergency Management said it was working to get 26 emergency shelters up and running in the city in time for the cyclone's arrival. The country's national carrier cancelled all domestic flights to and from the capital Auckland as well as several international flights.
