Stephen Curry was named the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion, the NBA announced Tuesday. Curry was recognized for his work in voter registration and education and for providing opportunities to underrepresented groups.
Curry was recognized for his work in voter registration and education and for providing opportunities to underrepresented groups. He served as co-chair of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “When We All Vote” initiative and worked for the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition’s “Freedom to Vote,” a program to advocate for the Freedom to Vote Act.
Curry’s lifestyle brand, Underrated, provides access to college recruiters, sports agents and other industry leaders for underrepresented groups along with scholarships and personal development. His Unanimous Media multimedia company works with underrepresented filmmakers, creators and writers across the entertainment industry.
His Eat. Learn. Play. nonprofit, co-founded with his wife Ayesha, has provided over 2 million meals and 500,000 books to Oakland, Calif., students. It also funded over 1,500 teacher-led classroom literacy projects and remodeled four new playspaces with multisport courts, playgrounds, gardens and murals and more.
Curry selected the University of San Francisco Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice to receive a $100,000 contribution from the NBA on his behalf.“As an athlete, I consistently leverage my platform to amplify advocacy and address the pervasive issue of systemic racism,” Curry said in a statement. “I firmly believe that we must be vocal both on social media and in real life, taking tangible actions to effect real change in our society and for generations to come.
