Arizona Republic sportswriter Bob McManaman breaks down Monday night's must-win NFL game between the Cardinals and New England Patriots.
At 4-8, the Arizona Cardinals' playoff chances are slim. The Republic's sports staff previews Monday night's must-win game against New England. There’s something peculiar going on with the Arizona Cardinals’ defense in 2022. Though the team has had multiple players stand out and produce big seasons, individually, it hasn’t translated into a winning formula overall for the rest of the defense.
Arizona allowed 30 or more points only once in its first six games and that came in the opener against Kansas City. Since then, however, opponents have scored 30 or more points in four of the team’s last six games.Defensive end J.J. Watt is playing as if he’s turned back the clock. Safety Budda Baker is on his way to his fifth Pro Bowl selection. Cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. was having a Pro Bowl-type season as well until suffering a back injury.
“I’m not sure,” defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said when asked about the disparity from an end-result perspective. “It’s been games where it’s been pretty good, and it’s been about five or six plays of bad football. I think where we are as a team, defensively, is we’ve had a chance to make plays and urn games and we haven’t made those plays all the time.
The Cardinals had a fumble recovery and an interception overturned in a 25-24 loss to the Chargers in Week 12, something Joseph and his players still lament. Had those plays stood up, Arizona likely would have won. But giving up so many points has been the killer.
