For years, Bryce Harper has thought about big-league baseball in his hometown. Now that it’s on the precipice of happening, he is conflicted about the entire thing. Harper tells MattGelb what the A's must do to succeed in Las Vegas:
“You’re not going to take a New York Yankees fan and change them into an A’s fan overnight.”
Immediate success would help, but the A’s as currently constructed are not primed for it. Harper sees one advantage of a move to Las Vegas: There is no state tax. That could entice free agents.“They’re going to have to build behind a player,” Harper said. “Who is that player going to be? Because it has to start next year. … If they go to Vegas next year, you have to be able to go, ‘We’re going to get this player. We’re going to spend $300 million on him. And this is what it’s going to be.
