There was a rare moment in the Commons yesterday This place finally did something right For once, the British parliament lived up to the best version of itself by voting to recognise Holodomor as genocide 🖋️ IanDunt for ipaperviews
People visit a monument to Holodomor victims during a commemoration ceremony marking the 87th anniversary of the famine of 1932-33, in which millions died of hunger, in Kyiv, Ukraine November 28, 2020.
Bad weather, combined with the deranged after effects of a forced collectivisation programme, resulted in a poor growing season in Ukraine. But the truth of what happened was not about an absence of food. It was about the purposeful starvation of a people. Soviet teams operated across Ukraine, entering people’s homes with long metal rods, designed to prod any surface in search of grain. They searched attics, chimneys, roofs, cellars, ovens, beds, underneath rubbish, in wells – anywhere it might have been hidden. They took any other food they found. They killed family dogs.
Latham’s speech was exceptional: historically accurate, literate, and indignant. At one point Labour MP Alex Sobel intervened. “I attended the Holodomor memorial in Kyiv with the honourable lady,” he said. “All the things she describes are laid out in great detail there. I was so overcome with emotion I could stay for only 10 minutes.”
After the debate, the Commons voted unanimously to recognise Holodomor as an act of genocide. That doesn’t have a practical effect. The Government’s position is that only genocides recognised by a court will be recognised by the British state.
