Rishi Sunak has been warned by Conservative MPs the party could lose the support of Brexit voters because they wanted immigration to fall

Ryan Shorthouse, founder of moderate Tory think tank Bright Blue, said: “Politicians should not panic: the spike in net migration figures the UK experienced in 2022 is highly likely to be overwhelmingly temporary.

He added: “Migration does need to be controlled. It is understandable why the Government wants to reduce the arrival of dependents of foreign students, which bring less economic value. But the net migration figures will fall naturally quite significantly in the years ahead.” Its director Madeleine Sumption said: “On one hand, the end of free movement has pushed net migration of EU citizens into negative territory, despite low unemployment and high demand for workers in the UK.
