Brandi Carlile commemorates Stonewall riots anniversary with a powerful photo

Brandi Carlile performs during the Starbucks annual shareholders meeting at WAMU Theater on March 20, 2019 in Seattle.The folk singer-songwriter commemorated the 50th anniversary of New York's Stonewall riots Friday with a powerful image of herself in front of three raised rainbow colored fists.

"On the 50th anniversary of the Stone Wall Riots, we commemorate the brave activists who encouraged a generation to fight for change. We reflect on how far we’ve come and the fight that’s still ahead," Carlile captioned the photo on her Girls Just Wanna Weekend Instagram page. The Stonewall riots began as a police raid at the Stonewall Inn and marked a momentous occasion in the gay rights movement.

Carlile, who has two young daughters with her wife, Catherine Shepherd, has been a longtime champion of gay rights.Billboard earlier this year. "As a gay woman approaching 40 who was married before it was legal, to say it’s refreshing is an understatement."
