This week marks the 50th anniversary of an incident that many contend gave rise to the modern gay rights movement: the unrest that erupted on June 28, 1969, when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. The resistance to the police crackdown inspired activists to mobilize, propelling the gay liberation movement.
