Blackburn with Darwen Tories contact police over Labour local election leaflet 'slur'
Leaflet wars have broken out in the local election campaign for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
Meanwhile Labour have questioned whether a pamphlet for Tory hopeful Ismail Patel in Bastwell and Daisyfield meets all the legal requirements. In Darwen South the Labour leaflet says ‘unknown Tory councillors take the expenses without putting in the work’ which Cllr Salton’s election agent Cllr Julie Slater says is an 'unjustified slur'.
“The statement in your leaflet is clearly a false statement about the personal character and conduct of our candidates. As such this matter will be brought to the attention of the electoral commission and the police. Councillor Salton has never claimed expenses and has only received her councillor allowance.”
Blackburn with Darwen Council deputy legal director Asad Laher replied to Cllr Slater’s complaint saying: “As your concerns relate to false statements about the personal character/conduct of a candidate I will refer your concerns to our Police Single Point of Contact.”
