Elsewhere, the glitching “Goldwing” pulled influence from Radiohead, and there was a hint of Nine Inch Nails to the industrial snarl of “Oxycontin”, while the chart-topping, hyper-raw “What Was I Made For” had tens of thousands of people singing along to her heartbreaking contribution to theMost festival headliners throw a variety of dazzling production tricks at their set to keep even the most casual of fans entertained.
A stripped back “Power” was delivered with a quiet fury as Eilish called out the abuse of power, while “TV” saw her wrestle with fame, regret and American politics. There were no easy answers to those complex questions, but there was something optimistic about seeing someone so open about vocalising them.
Eilish also called for a moment of calm ahead of the dreamy “When the Party’s Over”, before encouraging the crowd to look after one another and reminding them they were safe, loved, and “very important”. It was then back to joyous, communal rage with the closing “Happier Than Ever” offering a much-needed scream of catharsis.
The traditional fireworks of the festival then exploded overhead, but Eilish was too busy down on the barrier embracing fans like old friends. She was the youngest solo artist to ever headline Reading, and proved that the future is in safe hands.
