A lot has changed in 15 years since the Killers last played Reading, but their music remains universal and timeless
“We’ve got one stipulation, where are you from?” asked Brandon Flowers before he invited a fan to play the drums during The Killers’ headline set at Reading Festival.after bringing a Russian fan onstage at a headline show in neighbouring Georgia , and there was a brief moment of worry before Ozzy confirmed he was from just outside of Bath.
He then smashed out the rumbling “For Reasons Unknown”, grabbed a selfie and returned to the front row. It was the only moment of tension during an effortless headline set, and even that was turned into pure joy. “You know they used to call this the Reading rock festival,” said Flowers. The Killers last played here in 2008, topping a bill made up of fellow indie stars like Bloc Party and Jack White’s The Raconteurs but on Saturday, the Las Vegas group followed the rap might of Central Cee.
A lot has changed in those 15 years, but The Killers’ music remains universal and timeless. “Tonight, we’re turning back the clock,” Flowers promised and while there was a sense of nostalgia to the big hits from their seminal debut album, there was also plenty of fresh-faced excitement as a new generation got to scream along to the stadium pomp of “Smile Like You Mean It”, “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” and “Somebody Told Me”.
With the 20th anniversary of that album rapidly approaching, Flowers took a moment to thank the crowd for making their dreams come true. “The boys that wrote those songs got swept up in a whirlwind and stand before you,” he continued before a reflective “All These Things That I’ve Done”.
