Mandarin Roots announced that it permanently closed on Dec. 31 on“All good things eventually come to an end and it is with great sadness to announce that the time has come to close our doors,” the Facebook message read. “We are truly thankful and so fortunate to all our customers and employees who have supported us all these years. Thank you all for a wonderful 24 years of business.”
Before Mandarin Roots officially opened in 2014 under the ownership of Jarvis Yuan, the restaurant space was owned by his father, Simon Yuan, who operated Hunan Garden. Hunan Garden closed in 2014 after 15 years; it was rebranded as Mandarin Roots that same year,Amid the transition, Jarvis told Palo Alto Online that the goal for Mandarin Roots was to draw inspiration from the dishes his father prepared at Hunan Garden and revamp them with a California twist.
The sudden closure comes after another popular Peninsula restaurant closed its doors after two decades. in Millbrae likewise shuttered on Dec. 31 after 20 years because the owner sought retirement. The Chinese restaurant was best known for hosting hundreds of guests in its vast banquet hall.
