South Park writer serves up advice and recipes in 'How to Write a Novel in 20 Pies'
Baking and serving pies has always figured into Amy Wallen’s work life. In addition to simply loving the baked concoction, to hear her tell it, baking pies has also saved her career. The South Park writer and teacher points out early in “How To Write a Novel in 20 Pies” that “pie is what got me through” the process.
Condensing all her recipes into convenient writing metaphors was still a challenge at times. Some of them easily fell into place, such as using an apple pie recipe as a metaphor for the types of plotting a writer may have to do in order to write a novel. Others, however, required some refinement. That chapter serves as one of the more underlying but nonetheless central themes of the book: that Wallen is using her trusted method of baking pies as a means for inspiration. That is, when she’s stuck or has trouble writing, she doesn’t give up, she simply walks away and does something else creative as a means of recalibrating or even resetting her creativity. There are writers who use all sorts of methods when it comes to getting the creative juices flowing again.
“Because of my sardonic voice, it needed to be something sardonic as well. Something quirky,” says Wallen, who met Wilson at an L.A. writing group over a decade ago. “I sent him what I had and he was all for it. He’s a pie baker as well.” For Wallen, writing was always what she wanted to do. While she’s been in San Diego for over 30 years, she grew up moving all over the world. Her father worked for an oil company, which took her to parts of South America and Africa. She says that it was when her family returned to the U.S. that writing and pies began to play such a prominent role in her formative years. She stuck with the writing and pies have remained her go-to comfort food ever since.
