The new third-of-a-mile section of Memorial Park's Seymour Lieberman Trail was opened without a lot of advance fanfare, as park officials wanted the new route to be a happy morning surprise to those out for a walk or jog.
Marsha Schenau takes a picture of her pup, Joseph, during the opening of a new section of the Seymour Lieberman Trail at Memorial Park on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022. The newest section diverts runners off of the sidewalk along Memorial Drive to a new, shaded trail with three pedestrian bridges.
Holmes said she's training for a marathon later this year in Hawaii, and her affection for parks isn't just recreational. The Prairie View A&M University professor recently finished a documentary on parks, which looks at the historical exclusion from public parks that African Americans have faced. Holmes was the director and producer of the documentary and Clomax, also a film and media professor at Prairie View, was its cinematographer and editor.
"We haven't stopped working on something since 2015," Odinet said of the ambitious plan." is finished before it would have even started. The tree canopy will make a tremendous difference in how comfortable it is on a hot afternoon, getting away from car exhaust right on the roadway. Users will enjoy how pretty it is once they’re back in the trees."
Lieberman, who eventually worked as a lawyer in Houston, always loved exercise and sports, and when the couple had two daughters, he looked for a track team for them. When he came up empty handed, he created one, then went to wildcatter Glen McCarthy to sponsor teams for Houston boys and girls in the 1950s and 1960s. He ultimately founded the Junior Olympics and his daughter, Harriet Mellow, who is now 82 and lives in Dallas, said he went on to serve on the U.S.
Runners may remember Jim Fixx, the author of “The Complete Book of Running” who died of a heart attack while jogging in 1984, as the man who helped spark the fitness revolution of the 1980s, but Lieberman was the “grandfather of jogging” long before Fixx laced up his own shoes. Lieberman was 71 when he died in 1981 of leukemia.
