CHICAGO — The man haunting Houston’s week arrived with a chance to do it again. Eighth-inning hits from Yoán Moncada on both Monday and Tuesday broke baseball’s best bullpen and carried Chicago over the Astros. The White Sox suffered through seven frustrating frames Wednesday only to receive the same chance.
Stanek prevented a third consecutive eighth-inning collapse while preserving his starter’s sublime night. Framber Valdez spun seven innings of two-run ball before Stanek and closer Ryan Pressly procured the final six outs, propelling the Astros to a 3-2 win at Guaranteed Rate Field. He struck out six White Sox across the seven frames he worked, appearing unhittable at times and uneasy during others — a fitting way for Valdez to etch his name into a record book.
