A crushing blow did contain an encouraging sign.

It came in a tough loss Monday, but Astros outfielder Jake Meyers registered an important development in his return from shoulder surgery. In the eighth inning of Houston’s 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Monday, center fielder Jake Meyers charged Yoán Moncada’s go-ahead single, collected the baseball and fired an 89 mph throw into the infield. Meyers had played 621 prior innings in center field as a major leaguer. Only one of his other relay throws had a higher velocity.

Apparently, Meyers still must improve to play behind Houston ace Justin Verlander. Mauricio Dubón started in center field Tuesday for the fourth consecutive Verlander start, based almost solely on the strength of his throwing arm. “ is a good center fielder,” manager Dusty Baker said. “He’s probably second to Meyers and McCormick is more of a corner man. I have to stop them from going first to third because it could be a one-run game. With Meyers in there and his arm not 100 percent yet, that could present a first to third and it could cost us a game.”

Meyers, who hits righthanded but throws lefty, never touted an elite throwing arm. Tearing the labrum in his left shoulder last October only hindered it further. After he returned, the deficiency became obvious. Teams began to exploit Meyers and took extra bases at will.
