Just 5% of Ohio likely voters identified the environment as their top issue this year, according to a September USA TODAY Network/Suffolk University poll.

"I've become persuaded that climate change is certainly happening," Vance said."I think some of the alarmism is a little overstated. ... That said, if you're going to address this problem, one is technology. You have to create new energy sources that are lower emissions. Number two, you have to deal with the consequences of a changing climate, whatever those consequences ultimately look like.

At the same tie, one controversy with environmental implications has loomed large over Gov. Mike DeWine: House Bill 6. The legislation pushed by DeWine and other Republicans slashed renewable energy and energy efficiency standards while offering a $1 billion consumer-funded bailout to nuclear plants.

Environmentalists are encouraged to see the governor welcoming these investments, but they contend he's taking credit for projects made possible by federal funds that many Republicans opposed.
