For Carlotta de Bevilacqua, being fulfilled in life and work means identifying what makes you passionate, exploring it relentlessly, sharing your knowledge, and building collaborations to create transformative, sustainable innovations that improve and illuminate the world.
In de Bevilacqua’s case, the term “illuminate” is literal, given that the designer has dedicated the majority of her life and career to exploring and advancing innovation in the field of light. An architect, design innovator, entrepreneur and university professor, Carlotta de Bevilacqua is the vice president and CEO of Artemide and president of Danese Milano, a division of Italian light manufacturer Artemide.
In her twenties, de Bevilacqua met her husband, Ernesto Gismondi, the founder of Artemide, at an opening at the Triennale de Milano. Ever since they first locked eyes, they have been inseparable, both personally and professionally. She found that her interests and those of Gismondi made them well suited to work together, and their combined talents made them optimal working collaborators: “He is an engineer, the founder of the company, with a strong business attitude and closely tied to ‘doing.
The brand has had many notable collaborations, including ones with Naoto Fukasawa, David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel, Karim Rashid and Herzog & De Meuron, to name a few. And most recently with designers such as Elemental , BIG, Foster&Partners, Jean Nouvel, Herzog&De Meuron, Neri&Hu, and Gensler.
“Technological Humanism,” a term coined by de Bevilacqua and her team, is at the core of the legacy that she is striving to leave behind. de Bevilacqua and her team believe that sustainable light design means being responsible for our common future. And in creating this future, she realizes how important it is to involve and support the vision of future generations in creating new innovations.
