We chat with TheRealAnnaCamp about the terrifying realities of FromBlack (which is now avalable to stream on Shudder), the experience of leading her first horror film, and what fans can expect from her upcoming projects:
Paranormal horror meets the terrors of reality in Shudder's new release From Black. Directed by Thomas Marchese, the film centers around a young mother who blames herself for the disappearance of her son. Cora becomes fully committed to her sobriety following the tragedy, holding out hope that he will one day return. But after five years pass and her child is presumed dead, Cora takes desperate measures to bring him back.
Anna Camp on From Black Screen Rant: You've worked in different genres, but this is your first straightforward horror feature, right? Did you feel out of your element at all? Or did this come naturally to you? This is a heavy film for a lot of reasons. While there is a supernatural aspect, so much of this is real. Cora’s addiction is a villain she’s facing in itself. Can you give some insight into what work you did to prepare for that mindset?
Anna Camp: Actors use substitutions like, "Oh, my dog died," or, "This is how I feel." I'm not really like that. I mainly put myself in the actual shoes of the character and figure it out. I look at Trey, the young actor playing my son, Noah, and I love him. I figure out things that I love about him. The way he looks up at me with his big green eyes, or his voice, or the way he holds my hand as we walk to and from set.
Anna Camp: Great, great question. So we actually saved the present-day scenes with my sister for the very end of the shoot. So the first thing that you see is actually the thing that we shot at the very end, which is pretty typical, obviously, for movies and things to shoot out of order. But it was really interesting to get to live the life of the character, and then kind of be this different person, or be the present-day Cora at the end of the shoot.
