My company, Chic-CEO.com, is an online resource for over 100,000 female entrepreneurs. As a startup, we had to get scrappy in order to hit our goals and make an impact. When we started asking for the impossible and getting the green light, I knew we had stumbled on something magical - something I call 'Unreasonable Requests.' I write about female entrepreneurship and how to brand yourself. I live in beautiful Ozark country with my husband and two brilliant children.
1. Do Something That Challenges You—But Not In The Way You’re Thinking
When Heather gives this advice to her clients, they usually think she’s talking about running a marathon or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. But actually talking about a task that challenges them to be still, like only checking their email twice a day, turning down a project because they don’t have the capacity to work on it, going on a retreat or putting nothing on your calendar and just sitting on your porch and staring off into the distance all day.
Just because your mother-in-law lives near you, for example, doesn’t mean she’s the best person to babysit your kids. When you ask for help, it’s critical to make sure that the people you’re leaning on are best suited for the task and thrilled to deliver it. You can determine that by asking the same, basic question: “What are you passionate about?”Designate one day in your monthly calendar where no one—not your boss, not your clients, not your partner—can get hold of you by smartphone.
As soon as you get comfortable doing this once a month, try upgrading to doing it once a week—or even an hour once a day. When you start focusing on recharging your own batteries as much as you do your cell phone’s battery, you’ll never end up trying to squeeze out one more email when you’re down to 2% again.“Give it your all.” or “Go big or go home.” All those motivational phrases sound good, but they’re a surefire way to cozy up to burnout before Spring.
That 5% of work will get you 95% of results. Not to mention that it will save you late, stressful nights getting things done at the last minute.
