49ers free agency tracker: Niners lose key lineman to Jets; Steelers take Trubisky over Garoppolo
Day 1 of the NFL’s “soft opening” start to free agency saw the 49ers lose starters Laken Tomlinson and D.J. Jones before spending big on cornerback Charvarius Ward. Let’s recap the day:Two years ago, Ward started against the 49ers in the Super Bowl and emerged with a ring. Monday night, he came away with the 49ers’ richest contract for a cornerback in, well, a long time.
Among the 49ers’ 20 unrestricted free agents are cornerbacks Jason Verrett, K’Waun Williams and Josh Norman. Now Shanahan has lost Tomlinson to free agency. And later Monday, the 49ers lost a defensive starter who often faced Tomlinson in practice, nose tackle D.J. Jones. The 49ers’ immediate frontrunner to replace Tomlinson is Aaron Banks, who was an All-American left guard at Notre Dame before the 49ers selected him with a 2021 second-round draft pick. Banks essentially redshirted him his rookie year . Colton McKivitz, Jaylon Moore, Jake Brendel also could vie for Tomlinson’s old spot.
