Will the 49ers buck their recent trend and spend on a big-name cornerback to fix a glaring weakness?
Free agency is an ever-dangerous time, and the 49ers should approach this year’s marketplace with a short shopping list.
They covet defensive linemen, and they still must find an intimidating force to complement defensive end Nick Bosa, despite late-season surges by Samson Ebukam, Charles Omenihu, Jordan Willis and Arden Key. They’d be wise to pocket money to re-sign D.J. Jones on the interior, too, especially with 2020 top pick Javon Kinlaw coming off knee surgery.
Bosa is under team control through the 2023 season, and Samuel is entering the final year of his rookie contract. General manager John Lynch vowed after the season to retain both Bosa and Samuel as foundational pieces to a 49ers’ roster that still should very much contend for the Super Bowl, even with a neophyte at quarterback .
