San Antonio Spurs forward Zach Collins goes up for a shot against the Houston Rockets during the second half of an NBA basketball game Monday, March 28, 2022, in Houston.Zach Collins was the last player off the floor at Spurs shootaround Wednesday morning, having stuck around for an extra tutorial.
“I’m just trying to put both ends of the court together,” the 24-year-old Collins said. “I feel like I have probably had some games where one side was good, one side was bad. Maybe a few in between where I was good at both ends.” “They’re battling in that group and then they’re going out there and getting it done,” forward Keldon Johnson said. “It isn’t all about points. Sometimes it’s about the little things they do, getting extra possessions for us, tap backs and little things like that.”
“He is just consistent, keeps it simple,” Collins said. “That’s the biggest thing with Jakob. He doesn’t’ do anything too flashy, but he is very effective. He doesn’t get out of his bag too much. He just shows up every night and does his thing.” In the nearly two months and 20 games since, Collins has steadily built up his wind and discovered some semblance of rhythm. He was a key piece during the 4-0 road swing the Spurs completed before returning to face the Grizzlies, averaging 10.5 points, 5.8 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 51.6 percent.
The Spurs made a three-year, $22-million investment in the oft-injured Collins precisely because such skill does not often come in a 6-foot-11 package.Collins wasn’t the only oversized revelation on the Spurs’ recent road trip.
