★★★★ You can listen to this album tens of times and still not feel that you’ve got to the bottom of it. It unfurls like a new leaf over days and days and days 🖋️ katiesol
The musical references are so wide that it is impossible to classify Yves Tumors’ work – sometimes it is electronic and scary, and sometimes it sounds like a garage band on a good day. There are songs that sound like they’ve been sent to us from the future and songs that could be decades old – “In Spite of War” is a side-fringe-pierced-lip-emo song that could only have been made by someone who grew up on a steady diet of.
There is a roughness to Tumor’s voice but it is rarely harsh – and in places it is angelic, like on “Parody” where they question a person who uses their position to treat others as lesser: until the refrain, which they sing with a Brit-pop insouciance: “What makes you feel so important/ Can you spell it out for us/ Run it back in slow motion”.
They often bring in other voices to soften and smooth the edges, or use the instrumentation to heighten the friction. Every piece of every song feels specific, as though it’s been the subject of many long contemplations and placed precisely where it needs to be. You can listen to this album tens of times and still not feel that you’ve got to the bottom of it: “There’s parts of me I still don’t even know,” Yves Tumor sings on “God Is A Circle”, and that sums up Praise A Lord… too.
