The headline on Nasser Hussain’s guest columnlike something that could uplift our country. But, unfortunately, Hussain had to go down the road of so many commentators by demonizing one person in order to build up another.
He has so many facts wrong about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She was born to a working-class family, and her parents moved to the suburbs so she and her brother could get a good public education. That is why she pushes for quality education for all Americans, regardless of where they are born. The writer insinuates she is anti-father because of her social media posts. She worked extra shifts as a bartender after her father died of cancer. She did that when there was a risk of foreclosure on the family home because of all the medical bills. She graduated, with tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt, with degrees in economics and international relations.
Mayra Flores’ story is very compelling. She definitely knows what hard work is, growing up in a family of migrant farmers. Her story is the American dream. Imagine if the two could work together on the problems that face all Americans. That would be something to see.
