Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin accepted a $2 million donation from TikTok investor Jeff Yass despite banning the app as part of a broader anti-China push.
governor banned from stateJeff Yass, a billionaire financier whose personal stake in TikTok’s parent company is worth a reported $21 billion, donated $2 million to Youngkin’s Spirit of Virginia political action committee Tuesday. With hefty political donations, Yass has been helping TikTok rally conservatives in Washington against banning the app in the United States, theahead of the Nov.
Youngkin found support for the donation from a surprising corner — the pro-DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down. Ken Cuccinelli , a former Virginia attorney general who is founder and director of the PAC, said he had no objections to the donation as long as it doesn’t prompt Youngkin to ease his TikTok ban.“As long as the governor’s policies remain strong against China, this isn’t an issue,” Cuccinelli said. “Results are what matter.
Youngkin, who declared as Carlyle Group co-CEO in 2019 that the firm was “long-term bullish on China,” changed his rhetoric sharply as Youngkin later used video of his speech in a campaign-style online ad proclaiming that “Made in Virginia cannot be a front for the Chinese Communist Party.”
