Young women's hearts may be hit especially hard by the impacts of smoking: In a new study, being a smoker raised young women's risk for major heart attack by 13%, a greater increase in risk than male smokers faced.
British researchers examined data on more than 3,300 cases of acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction that occurred in the Yorkshire region of England between January 2009 and July 2014.
The largest risk difference between men and women smokers was among those aged 50 to 64, but the highest risk increase in both genders was among those aged 18 to 49.
