The backlash highlights increasing tensions over the use of e\u002Dbikes, which have been controversial inside and outside of parks

new rules that would allow bikes with electric motors — e-bikes — to be used on some trails within the national park. Historically, motorized locomotion has been verboten, and bicycle use, motorized or human-powered, remains relegated to certain trails within national parks.

“Neighbouring Jasper National Park … is properly more progressive allowing power assisted trail bicycles everywhere bicycles are allowed except frozen lakes and rivers,” says one email sent to Parks Canada in August 2021. In national parks, e-bikes must be pedal-assisted, meaning one needs to be pedalling to get power, rather than accelerating or maintaining speed without pedalling. The bikes can only have a power output of 500 watts and a max speed of 32 km/h. In an email, Parks Canada maintained Transport Canada’s designation is that such bicycles do not count as motorized.Article content

Since e-bikes make it easier to get where one’s planning on going, they open up swaths of land that may not have been as accessible to people otherwise. While this is a benefit to those of certain fitness or mobility capacities, writers noted that easier transportation could have a conservation impact. After all, they argued, not everybody can expect to mountaineer their way across a glacier — not all areas can be accessible to everyone.

“We need to make sure that as these new activities are introduced to the landscape and become increasingly popular, that we’re still managing the park and planning for these activities in ways that don’t compromise wildlife and wildlife habitat and the overall ecological integrity,” Elmeligi said in an interview.Article content

In August 2021, one person wrote to Parks Canada to say there are e-bikes on prohibited trails in Banff National Park “virtually every day” and that signage — and fines if necessary — should be used to deter motorized traffic.Article content
