A controlled release of toxic chemicals is planned for 3:30 p.m. today to begin to defuse the possible explosion that could occur from the five derailed train cars carrying vinyl chloride that are currently unstable. Gov. Josh Shapiro strongly is urging people in one to two mile area of the derailment to evacuate ahead of that controlled release.
Gov. Josh Shapiro announced on Monday that a controlled release of toxic chemicals from five derailed train cars in East Palestine, Ohio, could be deadly to residents living in a one-to-two-mile radius of the derailment and urges them to evacuate. The rail car contents are unstable andcould potentially explode, resulting in deadly shrapnel and toxic fumes, Shapiro said. The controlled release of the chemical is intended to try to alleviate the risk of uncontrollable shrapnel from the rail cars exploding Residents in a one-to-two mile radius of the derailment are being urged to evacuate since the chemical is considered toxic.
