The 49ers' fan base and head coach were understandably frustrated, but this loss was not on the refs.
49ersThe Niners were flagged 11 times for 81 yards, and Bay Area fans, reporters and most of all head coachwere all quick to point fingers at the referees for calls at San Francisco’s expense all game long. But while frustration is understandable, the level of finger-pointing at the referees seems to ignore that the first-quarter injury to quarterback Brock Purdy appeared to shake up the entire Niners team.
The referees were far from perfect and definitely were willing to throw flags for defensive holding and defensive pass interference with minimal amounts of contact. That’s not exactly an earth-shattering new development; that’s the direction the NFL has pushed officiating over the past 40 years. After all, the 49ers could have just as easily benefited from that tendency if they were able to have a more aggressive passing attack.
Several 49ers analysts and fans, including Steve Berman of the Athletic, thought Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson was getting away with false starts on every play. But as explained on Twitter, early movement does not inherently mean a penalty has been committed. As with every rule, there are loopholes that players attempt to exploit.
