Young Black prospective medical students often lack the mentorship that can determine whether they succeed in their goals or abandon them. As a young student, Dr. Chavone Momon-Nelson always knew she wanted to be a doctor; mentors at the college level, she said, were critical in guiding her.

Dr. Chavone Momon-Nelson credits the solid mentoring she received during her schooling for much of her success in medical school and beyond. Momon-Nelson is the chair of the ob/gyn department at UPMC Carlisle. Today we bring you the first in a series of profiles of Black health care professionals in central Pa.

Momon-Nelson today chairs the ob/gyn department at UPMC Carlisle. She completed her residency in 2010 from Cooper University Hospital in Camden, N.J. That mentorship from teachers, guidance counselors and college professors, she said, reaffirmed in her the belief that she could accomplish her goal. Momon-Nelson hopes the data showing a historic rise in numbers of Black first-year students into medical schools marks a change in the trajectory of health care for Black communities.Many young Black students face formidable hurdles in getting into medical school and staying there, she said.
