The Yankees released third baseman Josh Donaldson on Tuesday.
A lot of Yankees fans made it known on social media that they were thrilled. Donaldson made a lot of money, didn’t produce close to his past and at times lived up to his bad-guy reputation.
Clay Holmes said that he and Donaldson spent a lot of time together the last two seasons talking baseball, past and present. “He should have multiple Gold Gloves, but nobody voted for him because of his reputation,” IKF said. “Reputation or not, his defense has been lights out.”If you remember, Donaldson infuriated Anderson by mockingly calling him “Jackie” during a Yankees-White Sox game at Yankee Stadium. Anderson had told Sports Illustrated in 2019 that he “felt like today’s Jackie Robinson.” When Donaldson took offense, Anderson and the White Sox claimed he was being racist.
“To me, Donaldson was a great teammate,” Torres said. “We always had a really good relationship. He helped me a lot hitting wise. When he was injured, he was always with me when I was looking at video, and for no reason other than wanting to help me. And he did help me. He offered a lot of good tips on my feel at the plate, my swing, my hands.
Kiner-Falefa has heard that Donaldson wasn’t always a beloved teammate in some of his past stops — Oakland, Toronto, Cleveland, Atlanta and Minnesota — but thinks the bad-guy rap is overblown.
