The Yankees are headed toward the first losing season since 1992
Hal Steinbrenner would have to overrule GM
Brian Cashman and his baseball operations department. And that has never before happened with a managerial decision.while breaking down the Yankees’ season, a campaign that the GM called an embarrassment, a failure and a flat-out disaster last Wednesday. His language was stronger than that of any other Yankees player, coach or executive all season.
“We are what our record says we are,” Cashman said. “We’re certainly not proud of it. It’s been a disaster of a season. We’re embarrassed by it. But there’s still time on the clock for us to find a way to turn it around while we’re still active and learn as much as we possibly can on the players that are out there.”
The Yankees are 62-68 and in last place in the AL East. The last time they finished last in the division was in 1991. That season, George Steinbrenner fired Bucky Dent after starting the season 18-31. He replaced him with Stump Merrill, who finished out the season going 49-64. The following season, Merrill too was fired by “The Boss,” who clearly didn’t think twice about making changes throughout his tenure as Yankees owner.
Hal Steinbrenner isn’t like his old man, however. He relies on Cashman to make staffing decisions, and, according to Martino, the topic of Boone’s future hasn’t even been broached.Boone replaced Joe Girardi as Yankees manager in 2018. Since then, the team has a 489-349 record, including five postseason appearances.
