Michael King tied his career-high in strikeouts against the Brewers on Saturday, continuing to excel as a starter.
This stretch has also featured a slow build in King’s pitch count, a good taste of what it’ll be like for King if he starts next spring. King’s season-high in pitches before his start against the Nationals on Aug. 24 was 44. He threw 50 on that day and has added just about 10 pitches to that in total each start since, throwing 79 on Saturday. Last time out, King twirled five innings of one-run ball against the Astros in Houston, earning the first win of his MLB career.
The Yankees won’t need to check with the right-hander to see if he wants to stay in this role heading into next season. He hasn’t shied away from exhibiting that interest over the years. What the Yankees need to decide is whether they’re willing to subtract King’s value as a multi-inning weapon in relief and use him as a full-time starter.
With the way the Yankees’ staff stands as of now, there’s one spot to fill. Ace Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt will be coming off great seasons whileKing could occupy that No. 5 spot. He should at least have a chance to earn it in spring training, certainly if he keeps churning out these results the rest of the way. It’s a win-win scenario in that sense. If he stumbles as a starter or another arm beats him out, King can return to the bullpen, where he’s been dominant for the last three seasons.
