Astros rookie Yainer Diaz hits his way into cleanup spot
Rookie Yainer Diaz connects for a home run off the Mets' Max Scherzer, producing the Astros' lone run in an 11-1 loss Monday night.Yainer Diaz received a mild surprise late Monday night when he checked the Astros’ lineup for the next day and found his name in the cleanup spot.
His offense scuffling, manager Dusty Baker wrote the 24-year-old Diaz into the fourth spot for the first time this season as designated hitter against the Mets and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. Yordan Alvarez’s oblique injury has left an obvious void in the middle of Houston’s lineup. Alvarez has been a fixture in the No. 3 spot, with José Abreu, Alex Bregman and Tucker slotting in behind him. Bregman slotted second and Tucker third on Tuesday. Abreu, who entered batting .224 but with a career .388/.444/.816 slash line in 54 plate appearances against Verlander, manned the fifth spot.
