1st Sgt. Alfred Dietrick was part of the Allied force that invaded Italy in 1943. Later in life, he was known for his love of 1940s hits and stories.
Retired Sgt. Alfred Dietrick laughs with a friend as he celebrates his 100th birthday at Jim's in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 15, 2021. Seventy-eight years ago, Dietrick was a 36th Infantry Division bazooka man who landed at Salerno, Italy, in 1943. Dietrick died Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 101.
When he made it to 100 just 10 days before Christmas 2021, Dietrick was the oldest living veteran of the Texas Army National Guard’s 36th Infantry Division. Just short of a dozen T-Patchers, as members of the fabled division are called, saluted him at a veterans breakfast at a local Jim's Restaurant and presented him an award for service.
He'd already had served in Morocco and Algeria before landing at Salerno in 1943 with the 141st Infantry Regiment. The invasion of Italy, code-named Operation Avalanche, promised to be bloody, with hard fighting in miserable conditions that winter.
