GM’s driverless-car unit has requested approval from California regulators to begin public testing of a shuttle that has no steering wheel, showing the auto maker’s determination to make progress on autonomous vehicles as rivals step back
to develop partially automated driving features that can be used in its vehicles sooner.
Cruise intends to operate the Origin in the city and county of San Francisco at speeds up to 35 mph at all hours of the day, except when inclement weather is present, the application shows. In its application to the California DMV, Cruise said it has developed a suite of tests specifically tailored to autonomous vehicles to verify the Origin’s capabilities and on-road compliance with vehicle regulations and industry standards.What do you think is the future for self-driving cars? GM asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in February to grant it a temporary exemption to allow it to operate a limited number of vehicles without steering wheels or manual controls on public roadways, according to a petition submitted to regulators.
