A wrong-way detection system will be installed in 2023 on stretches of Interstate 71 and Interstate 90 in Cleveland. The system will be installed on a 22-mile-long stretch of both highways between West 150th Street and East 140th Street, ODOT said.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A wrong-way detection system will be installed in 2023 on stretches of Interstate 71 and Interstate 90 in Cleveland, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
When the work begins next year, it will include the installation of wrong-way signs that will flash when activated and 50 detection devices at 25 locations, ODOT said. The analysis also looked at the number of alcohol-related crashes that happened within a quarter-mile of potential wrong-way entry points, the number of bars and restaurants serving alcohol near the exit ramps and the amount of traffic using said ramps, ODOT said.
The system works by a detector that senses when a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction on the ramp. It immediately triggers a pair of “wrong way” signs with lighted borders that flash rapidly to alert drivers of their mistake, ODOT said.
