Judith Viorst’s new book of poems, “Nearing 90,” focuses on the comedy and wisdom of late life.

J is best known as the author of books for children, especially “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” which has sold about four million copies since it was published in 1972.

But she faced a different kind of challenge when she started writing the poems in her new book, “Nearing 90 and Other Comedies of Late Life.“ “In late life, there are a lot of tough things you’re dealing with,” says Ms. Viorst, who is 88. “You’re thinking of moving to a retirement community with old people.
