Geraint Parry has been a full-time employee with Wrexham since 2002 — he precedes the Hollywood takeover. The club's longest-serving staff member understands what the Ryan Reynolds-Rob McElhenney ownership means the most:
As Wrexham’s longest-serving member of staff and veteran of the many crises that befell the Welsh club in the early 2000s, Geraint Parry really thought he had seen it all.
As with everyone else on the staff, Geraint could go months without getting paid during those dark days. He was also present at the Football League meeting when clubs were debating what points penalty to hit Wrexham with as the first to enter administration since a change of the rules. “Some wanted 30 points, but eventually they settled on 10,” he says.
As, it should be said, did the response to Wrexham being told to raise a £250,000 bond in just a few days or face expulsion from the Conference in 2011. “Porto remains a big highlight,” he says about Wrexham’s stunning European Cup Winners’ Cup first-round victory over the Portuguese side on away goals in 1984-85. “To get through over two legs was very special against a team who had reached the final the previous year and lifted the European Cup in 1987.”Knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup in 1992 as a Fourth Division team is the other standout memory.
His move to the full-time staff in 2002 came via the advent of the internet. “NTL ran the websites at the beginning and gave the clubs £100,000 each to staff the website,” he explains. “Basically, our club did nothing, other than use the money to pay the bills. As the years went on, the number of tasks fulfilled by this quietly spoken, modest man mushroomed. Along with the usual club secretary duties such as player registrations and arranging fixtures, he’d greet the officials on a home matchday as well as muck in with clearing the pitch if snow had fallen. On away trips, Geraint would order the post-match pizzas for the players to eat on the bus home.
