The world’s population could hit eight billion on November 15 as part of a ‘milestone year.’

The organisation’s new report, released to mark World Population Day, revealed global population growth fell below 1% in 2020 – its slowest rate since 1950.Overall, the world’s population is expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and hit a peak of around 10.4 billion during the 2080s.UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres called 2022 a ‘milestone year’ with ‘the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant’.

He said: ‘This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognise our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates.‘At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.’

More than half of the projected increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania. Countries of sub-Saharan Africa are expected to contribute more than half of the increase anticipated through 2050.

Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General for economic and social affairs, warned that rapid population growth makes eradicating poverty, combatting hunger and malnutrition.
