International bodies, countries and rights groups slam the Myanmar junta over the conviction and sentencing of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison, demanding her release
Association of Southeast Asian Nations's Parliamentarians for Human Rights have called the charges against Suu Kyi and other detained MPs as "nothing more than an excuse by the junta to justify their illegal power grab."
"This sentencing is further evidence that, for the sake of its own credibility and future, the Association of South East Asian Nations must hold the line against this illegal takeover.Myanmar's junta is trying to "suffocate freedoms" with its jailing of Suu Kyi for incitement and breaching Covid-19 regulations, Amnesty International has said.
"The harsh sentences handed down to Aung San Suu Kyi on these bogus charges are the latest example of the military's determination to eliminate all opposition and suffocate freedoms in Myanmar," the group said in a statement."This is a judicial system in a court that is far from independent," said Deputy Asia Director for HRW Phil Robertson.
The UK 🇬🇧 calls on the regime to release political prisoners, engage in dialogue and allow a return to democracy.Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has said the prison sentence was "another appalling attempt by Myanmar's military regime to stifle opposition and suppress freedom and democracy".Japan's foreign ministry has voiced "concern" over the verdict, which it called "an unfavourable development.
