Breaking: In its opening World Cup game in Qatar, the United States drew, 1-1, with Wales
If the young and inexperienced Americans were nervous for their Group B opening match against Wales at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, they didn’t show it in the first half while building a one-goal lead. But Gareth Bale’s penalty kick goal in the 82nd minute salvaged a 1-1 draw for the Dragons and left both sides with a point in the standings.
After a couple of close calls in the early going, U.S. Coach Gregg Berhalter’s aggressive approach translated to a goal in the 36th minute, when 22-year-old forward Tim Weah flicked a beautiful through-ball assist from Christian Pulisic past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
