FIFA deciding to pull back on the Visit Saudi sponsorship deal in the upcoming Women’s World Cup demonstrates how powerful players’ voices can be to create change. But the success of collective activism comes at a price too. Supported by Google.

Speaking toin February, Bonita Mersiades, chair of Women in Football Australia, criticised the “hypocrisy” of such a deal.

Saudi Arabia’s human-rights record has been described as “appalling” by Amnesty International. Women were not allowed to watch football matches in that country until 2018. “If you want to push women’s sport on, we want it to be supported by people who share their philosophies and the views that we share as players and as a game, which is supporting women, which is high-level sport, high-level football, fully inclusive — we welcome everybody to our sport.
