For Igor Andreev and Masha Komarov, knitwear is a way of life. The Russian duo has captured the hearts of Muscovite cool kids with their babushka-style sweaters, creamsicle-swirl tube tops, and saucy mini skirts in Easter Egg tones. Nothing about Vereja, their year-old label, is ordinary; they even make wedding veils spun like fishnets.
Shen’s fall 2021 show at Taipei Fashion Week—the first fully physical fashion week of 2021—was partly inspired by the story of the Last Supper and Jesus’s death, with models dressed in all-white with blood-like floral masks, eggs, and vines. But it was as much about the future as the past: Seivson imagined the models not in the time of Jesus, but in 2062 after the world has ended. “In 2062, what is the message you want to tell yourself in 2021?” she mused.
The Manchester-born designer quickly gained high-profile fans further afield as well: Rihanna and ASAP Rocky scooped up his first offering before retailers had even placed their orders. Soon after, he found himself dressing one of the UK's brightest stars: Michaela Cole. “Up until I made that dress, Michaela had made all her outfits with her mum, so I felt really honored to know that she wanted to wear Maximillian,” says Davis.
This year, he’s taken his ruffle couture to new markets, collaborating with Emilio Pucci on bodysuits that reinterpret the brand’s legendary prints and producing a namesake wedding dress collection. His fashion shows, staged in Tokyo and other places across Japan because of the pandemic, have become some of the industry’s most anticipated—proof that operating globally while thinking locally is a winning strategy.
