The winner between former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr. will earn a shot at unbeaten WBC champion Tyson Fury.
ACAPULCO, Mexico -- The World Boxing Council mandatory committee will meet Wednesday to order three significant fights involving the sport’s glamour divisions and athletes, four people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
Three-belt welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., who saw negotiations for an undisputed fight with fellow unbeaten champion Terence Crawford recently crumble, will meet WBC top-rated contender and former WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman Jr. The pair are expected to participate in a February bout.
Making Benavidez-Plant the mandatory for four-division champion Alvarez could lead to one of the sport’s most entertaining clashes of later 2023. With Wednesday’s move, Alvarez would be free to wait and take a bout against the Benavidez-Plant winner later in the year. First, the rival World Boxing Association was first in line among the three sanctioning bodies for the Spence mandatory, with Lithuania’s Eimantas Stanionis – the WBA's secondary welterweight champion – positioned for the title shot. It’s unclear if there will be a financial penalty or requirement for Spence to pay for bypassing Stanionis as his mandatory.
