More than 8,000 workers at nearly 80 King Soopers stores went on strike for better wages on Wednesday as negotiations stalled, but stores stayed open after the Kroger Co-owned Colorado chain hired temporary staff and promoted online ordering.
as rising Omicron cases and inflation push workers to demand higher wages and better working conditions. At King Soopers, workers have sought an increase in wages of at least $6 per hour for all. The company's "last, best and final offer", made on Tuesday, proposed raises of up to $4.50 per hour based on job classification and tenure.
That was lower than the $18 per hour King Soopers advertised for replacement workers at various locations including Denver, Evergreen, Golden and Littleton, a move that several Twitter users called out on the social media platform. The company is also encouraging customers to shop online, reducing delivery fees to $1 on online orders of more than $35 for a limited time. It opened up alternative "offsite" pickup locations as well, such as a parking lot in Lakewood, Colorado, according to a banner ad on Kingsoopers.com.Kroger does not disclose sales of King Soopers, which operates more than 110 stores in Colorado and is the No. 1 grocery chain in the state by market share.
