Armstrongs Group, who operate Montcliffe Quarry north of Bolton, face objections to the length of time the work is taking

A firm is asking for a further ten years to complete work on an unsafe quarry face which they originally said would be completed by 2021. Armstrongs Group operate Montcliffe Quarry, close to the West Pennine Moors and Rivington Pike, near Horwich.

In February 2015, re-profiling and stabilisation work to the north eastern face of Montcliffe Quarry was approved after an independent inspection found the face was unsafe. They said a number of loose rocks and boulders regularly fell from height into the base of the quarry. A report to councillors, who will decide on the deadline extension on Thursday August 17, said: “The quarry operator has commenced the reprofiling works, however they have stated that there have been significant issues with

“As well as a reported 12 months delay owing to Covid-19 restrictions, the applicant states that the shale overburden and inter-burden present at the top of the quarry face has presented significant challenges and has significantly delayed the works. Given the difficulties with removing the shale, the applicant believes that a timeframe of 10.5 years is realistic to complete the works.”
